What is Turquoise?

Turquoise is an opaque copper-aluminum phosphate prized from Persia to the American Southwest for millennia — one of the first gemstones ever mined. Sky blue to green, often veined with brown matrix.

Meaning & symbolism

A talisman of protection on journeys and friendship kept true, turquoise symbolizes open skies and safe passage. December's birthstone.

How to wear & pair it

Stunning with silver tones, white howlite, or red carnelian in southwestern palettes. 8mm beads show its matrix veining well.

Care

Porous and soft: no perfume, no soaking, wipe gently. It can deepen slightly with skin contact over years — collectors consider that patina part of its story.

Frequently asked

Why does turquoise have brown veins?

That is host-rock matrix left in the stone — a fingerprint of where it formed. Clean sky-blue and spiderweb-matrix stones are both prized, differently.

Is all turquoise natural?

Much commercial turquoise is stabilized (resin-hardened) to be wearable, and imitations abound. Genuine stone shows natural color variation between beads.
